Tooit migrates from Rancher to Amazon EKS with persistence, backups and scaling
Tooit is a software development company providing digital solutions for various business needs. It ran a cluster deployed on Rancher where the development, UAT and production environments coexisted. Craftech migrated its platform to Amazon EKS with data persistence, backups and scaling capability.
Challenge
Tooit ran a Rancher cluster with dev, UAT and prod environments coexisting. The PODs used the instances' storage, so it was not possible to share data and, consequently, to scale. There was also no backup solution —in particular, no backup of the Drupal files— on top of the complexity of dockerization and the inability to scale the existing architecture.
Solution
Craftech migrated the Rancher cluster to Amazon EKS with three environments separated into namespaces (Dev, Stg and Prod). For data persistence, Amazon EFS was adopted, with AWS Backup to protect that storage. Cert Manager certificates were migrated to AWS ACM and the charts to Helm 3. The infrastructure was created with Terraform, monitoring was implemented with Grafana, Prometheus, Elasticsearch and Graylog, and secrets were managed with Vault.
Results
Tooit ended up with its platform running on Amazon EKS across three namespace-separated environments, with shared data persistence via Amazon EFS and backups managed with AWS Backup, enabling the scaling that was previously impossible. The infrastructure was left as code with Terraform, with observability (Grafana, Prometheus, Elasticsearch, Graylog), certificates managed with AWS ACM and secrets management with Vault.
