Kubernetes adoption and DevOps culture for EnvíaYa on AWS
EnvíaYa is a platform for generating quotes and shipping orders across the United States and Latin America. Craftech supported EnvíaYa in modernizing its platform on AWS, focused on containers, deployment automation and DevOps practice adoption.
Challenge
EnvíaYa needed to implement infrastructure best practices, achieve reliable scaling and migrate to Kubernetes for self-management. The operation carried concrete pain points: a single CDN cache shared between production and non-production environments —which made tests hit production services—, very complex nginx configurations and manual production updates, with knowledge concentrated in just a few people.
Solution
Craftech ran a full modernization on AWS: AWS Organizations adoption and account separation, application dockerization, Helm-chart deployments on Kubernetes and migration of Bitbucket pipelines from CodeDeploy to Helm. It unified the local development environment with Docker, centralized logs, monitoring and secrets/variable management, introduced per-environment CDN caching strategies and migrated WordPress from EC2 to Kubernetes with EFS to improve scaling, availability and reliability. Infrastructure versioning and cronjob management were also covered, with a focus on building and fostering a DevOps culture in the team.
Results
Environment and account separation removed the risk of tests impacting production and gave per-environment infrastructure cost visibility. The platform ended up on Kubernetes with standardized Helm-based deployments, high availability and concurrent writes to backend storage, plus cost reductions through Spot instances, nightly shutdown of non-production environments and a Karpenter implementation. The EnvíaYa team gained greater autonomy to manage its own infrastructure.
