Contabilium is an ERP management system for entrepreneurs and SMBs in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, streamlining sales, inventory, purchasing, finance and tax compliance with real-time KPIs. Facing an excessive increase in its Azure infrastructure billing, it sought alternatives, and AWS stepped in assigning Craftech as Partner to migrate and modernize its platform, with AWS funding.

Challenge
The trigger was an excessive increase in the billing of its Azure-hosted infrastructure. The technical challenge was threefold: in the assessment, understanding the application and translating the Azure ecosystem into something compatible to stand up on AWS with a safe, economically viable migration plan; in the migration, dealing with Azure Linux instances incompatible with AWS that required OS-level adjustments, and implementing continuous replication for SQL Server using native features; and in the modernization, the complexity and coupling of the platform —combined with the lack of a full test environment— that made each deployment harder.
Solution
Craftech ran the project in three stages. The assessment (1 month) surveyed the Azure resources and designed the solution and AWS migration plan. The migration (3 months) moved the infrastructure from Azure to AWS within a tight maintenance window, with no data loss, optimized costs, full monitoring, backups and centralized access management via SSO. The modernization (6 months) migrated the PHP and React workloads from EC2 to Kubernetes (Amazon EKS): dockerization and Dockerfile optimization, Redis migration to Amazon ElastiCache, CI/CD pipelines to automate deployments, demand-based autoscaling, and Spot instances for flexible workloads with On-Demand for critical services. Documentation and numerous training sessions were delivered.
Results
The migration was successful with limited downtime, and the new infrastructure added monitoring and observability, scalability, resilience and deployment automation. Contabilium's infrastructure cost dropped by 40% upon completing the stages. Craftech also supported the client with suggestions and application changes to adapt it to the new technologies and make it more cost-efficient.
